How did you get your start as a travel advisor?

If you had asked a younger me where I thought I would be in my future career, travel was not in my vocabulary. My only vacation growing up was to visit my grandparents!

The day before college graduation, I fell at work and injured my spine. I missed every interview I had lined up. While I was healing, I took a job at a local travel agency answering phones and greeting travel vendors.

What surprised me was how much I loved it. Vendors would come in to share their destinations, and I realized travel wasn’t just about selling tickets – it was about storytelling and connection.

After recovering, I moved into wholesale travel as a Midwest sales manager, traveling across five states to help agencies promote Orlando and Caribbean vacations. I was teaching advisors about niche marketing and selling our destinations.

Life threw another curveball in 1997: While on maternity leave with my newborn son, my company eliminated my role. My dad gave me the best piece of advice. ‘Find something you are passionate about, and figure out a way to make money doing it!’

So, with a 5-month-old in my arms and a desktop computer tucked into his closet, I bought the domain Magical-Vacations.com. It wasn’t the path I planned – but it turned out to be exactly where I was meant to be.”

How did you build your business over the years?

I built my business with passion, creativity and a clear niche, long before ‘specializing’ was an industry trend. From a desktop computer, a landline phone and a passion for Disney Destinations, friends and family trusted me first, and from there, referrals fueled the growth.

I applied the same strategies I had once taught agencies on the wholesale side – carving out a niche, becoming an expert and delivering meaningful, personal service. I crafted customized touring plans, timed dining reservations and layered in little surprises – scrapbook-worthy invitations and a touch of ‘pixie dust,’ which made every trip feel extraordinary.

As word spread, I invested in my community too – volunteering, serving on local boards and building a network of relationships that grew far beyond my hometown.

While Magical Vacations was founded with a focus on our niche, over time we expanded thoughtfully, curating travel experiences around the world – from luxury resorts to European river cruises – always with the same personal touch that built our foundation.

What characteristics make you a successful advisor?

I always say, ‘I don’t sell travel – I help curate lifelong memories through travel experiences.’

Successful advising, to me, is about seeing beyond logistics. Every client has a dream tucked inside their plans, and my role is to uncover it, guide it and bring it to life. I build experiences layered with strategy and heart – because it’s the little details that turn a trip into a story families will tell for generations.

I also believe in staying endlessly curious. In a changing industry, I never stop learning, adapting or growing. That mindset has allowed my business to expand thoughtfully beyond Disney, introducing new destinations, new vendors and new adventures – while always keeping the heart of our service the same.

Above all, I believe clients feel when you genuinely care about their memories as much as they do. That trust is earned – and I try to never take it for granted.

What have been your greatest challenges been?

My greatest challenge wasn’t a business pivot or a market shift – it was learning, the hard way that even passion has its limits.

In 2012, I suffered a stress-induced heart attack. I was trying to be everything to everyone –building my client base, expanding the agency, training new advisors, raising children and caring for aging parents – without ever stopping to breathe.

That experience changed everything. It taught me that success isn’t about doing more; it’s about doing the right things, in the right way with the right support. I realized the importance to stop and take care of yourself and your mindset, and listen to your body.

In an industry that glorifies nonstop hustle, especially during crises like the pandemic, it’s easy to believe that burnout is just part of the job. But it’s not sustainable – and it’s not necessary.

That challenge made me a better leader. I learned to delegate, to trust my team and to build a business that could thrive without sacrificing my health or my family. It’s a lesson I carry with me – and one I hope more advisors will take to heart before their bodies force them to.

What are your greatest accomplishments?

My greatest accomplishment is building something that didn’t just survive – it grew into a place where others could build their dreams too. Magical Vacations started as a simple idea – just me, a desktop computer and a passion for creating unforgettable memories. Over time, it grew into a profitable, independent agency, which currently supports more than 40 advisors across the country.

Along the way, I realized success isn’t about doing everything yourself — it’s about growing with the right people. After the pandemic, I connected with a new network of inspiring female leaders in the travel industry who pushed me to think bigger, evolve our offerings and explore new global destinations.

But what makes me proudest is seeing what this business has become for others. Some of my advisors started just hoping to cover their kids’ dance lessons. Today, it helps pay car payments, mortgages and even supports full retirements.

What began as one woman’s dream has become a launching pad for others – and that’s a legacy I’m deeply proud to keep building.

What tips can you provide advisors new to the industry?

If we were sitting down over coffee and you asked me how to succeed in this industry, I’d tell you this: Start by investing in yourself. Take the time – right from the beginning – to learn, to train and to build your foundation. Every course you take, every certification you earn and every connection you make is watering the roots of your future success.

Build your network thoughtfully. Create a database of everyone you know – even if they never book with you themselves. You never know who they’ll tell. Trust is something you earn over time, not something automatically given. And often, your strongest advocates won’t be friends or family – they’ll be the clients who see you as the expert you are.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever heard came from author and speaker Greg Bell, who teaches the philosophy of ‘Water the Bamboo.’ He shares that giant timber bamboo can take years to show even an inch of visible growth – but underground, it’s building a powerful root system. And when the time is right, it soars.

Building a travel business is the same way. You won’t always see the results immediately, but every step you take – every client call, every small win – is growing something extraordinary. Keep watering your bamboo. The growth is coming – and when it does, it will be bigger than you ever imagined.
