French Open men’s semifinals set as Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic advance

The semifinals of the men’s singles bracket at the 2025 French Open are now set. A pair of quarterfinal matchups concluded on Wednesday, as top seed Jannik Sinner downed Alexander Bublik while the sixth-seeded Novak Djokovic took out the third-seeded Alexander Zverev. On Tuesday, Lorenzo Musetti and Carlos Alcaraz made it past their opponents to punch their tickets, too.

Wins for the latter two came at the expense of the remaining two American men in the field: Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul. Tiafoe, the 15th seed, fell to Musetti in four sets, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Paul, the 12th seed, fell to the second-seeded Alcaraz in straight sets and really didn’t put up much resisting, falling 6-0, 6-1, 6-4.

That means there won’t be an American winner in the men’s singles bracket yet again, and Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open win will remain their last Grand Slam victory.

In the first matchup on Wednesday, Sinner needed no time at all to defeat the unseeded Bublik. He dropped his opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, 6-0, punching his ticket to the semifinals. Bublik had six double faults, while Sinner won on 78 percent of his first serves to easily control the match.

Sinner’s best showing at the French Open was a semifinals appearance last season, so his advancement here matches that. He has won Grand Slam tournaments at the Australian Open and US Open, including winning the former earlier this year. He still needs titles at Wimbledon and Roland Garros, and is one step closer for the latter after downing Bublik.

Zverev cruised to a quick first set victory against Djokovic in his quarterfinal, but the Serb quickly turned the tables and took the next three straight to advance, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. There was a moment early in the fifth set where the two went back-and-forth on a 41-shot rally that was eventually won by Djokovic.

Djokovic enjoyed his 100th win at Roland Garros this tournament, becoming the second player ever to do so after Rafael Nadal. He’s won the title at Roland Garros three times, to go along with 10 titles in Australia, seven at Wimbledon, and four at the US Open. The 38-year-old hasn’t won a Slam since the 2023 US Open, however.

Sinner and Djokovic have faced each other eight times over the years, splitting the matchups at four apiece. That includes just one meeting on clay, which was won by Djokovic, though that was back in 2021. Sinner has taken the last three meetings between the two.

Alcaraz and Musetti, the eighth seed, have faced each other seven times as professionals, with Alcaraz taking six of those meetings. Musetti last bested him in 2022, which was on clay, but the other four clay matches went to Alcaraz. This semifinal appearance is Musetti’s first at the French Open and second overall for a Grand Slam.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, is the defending champion at Roland Garros, and also has wins at Wimbledon and the US Open. He made it to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open this season, so this would be his first Slam finals of 2025 if he makes it past Musetti.

The men’s semifinals will take place on Friday after a day off (the women’s semifinals will happen on Thursday), with television coverage of the matches provided by TNT. Live streaming will also be available via TNT and Max, as they have been all tournament.
